Five College Scholarships Awarded

Recently we had the privilege of awarding three Big Island graduating high school seniors and two Hawaii Community College students scholarships.

The three recent graduates received our annual Barney S. Fujimoto Memorial Scholarships, earmarked for students planning to attend college within the University of Hawaii system. The scholarship is named after the son of our company’s founder, who served as CEO during the 1930′s and 40′s, and who had a strong believe in the benefits of education.

Recipients Makana Agcaoili of Pahoa High School and Kaitlin Tavares, of Kamehameha Schools will be attending UH Manoa in September where Makana plans on studying genetic engineering and Kaitlin will be majoring in Chemistry.  Kendra Fujioka, a Hilo High School graduate, will attend UH Hilo to earn her biology degree then plans to continue to pursue masters degree in Pathology.

Orion Paye and Shiloh Castro, both Hawaii Community College students, were selected to receive $750 “Building Future Builders” scholarships toward their second-year in the Carpentry program.

Applications for 2013 scholarships will be available in January.
